Hatsune Miku: An Uncertain Image

Publication: Research - peer-reviewJournal article

Stina Hasse Jørgensen, Sabrina Vitting-Seerup, Katrine Wallevik

The article contributes significantly to academic discussions of popular culture and visual studies, arguing that the Japanese pop star Hatsune Miku can be understood as an uncertain image. Hatsune Miku is continuously desired, animated, produced, circulated and consumed by fans, while profit is channeled back to the company behind; Crypton Future Media creating an uncertain image. The question is what will happen to the dialogical, the affective and the collaborative aspects of the Hatsune Miku fan culture, and fan culture in general, if companies with commercial interests continue to channel affective fan labor?
