CTR’s textile workshops will run again this autumn. This semester’s workshops will have focus on textiles and textile tools of the Viking Age, providing background to important ongoing research in the field. Starting with the preparation of a fleece of wool, we will use reconstructions of archaeological tool finds such as wool-combs, spindles and looms to produce samples of textiles relevant to this period. The use of one single fleece will also allow us to consider sheep farming, tool production, use of different types of textiles, technological know-how, and sustainability in the wider context of the Viking Age. Hands-on experimental work will be accompanied by a short specialist lecture.

Topics for pop-up talks include:

  • Introduction to Viking Age Textiles & Textile Production
  • Dress & Costume in the Viking Age
  • Viking Age Textile Tools
  • Texts and Textiles: Written Sources on Viking Age Textile Production

 Organizers

Eva Andersson Strand, Magdalena Öhrman, and Cailin Kwoh.
