Pastoral practices in ancient Sudan

From the very beginnings of Sudan and Nubia’s history, the world of animals has had a tremendous influence on the cultural and economic make-up of past societies among the Middle Nile valley.

This seminar will explore some of the intricacies that deeply embedded animals - especially domestic species - in the daily life of past people. Thanks to a multidisciplinary group of speakers, we will especially develop aspects beyond the consumption of food, such as domestication, heard management, skin and fibre production, dress practices, and the symbolic roles of animals), focusing on a period spanning from the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages.
