Archaeological textiles and the mutability of perception

In archaeological textile research, fragile evidence is analysed through traditional archaeological and scientific approaches. These factual results are directed towards specific outcomes; the identification of a fibre, the quality of wool, the weave structure, the way a fabric is worn or used. These results are foundational. Yet they can unintentionally create fixed categories of understanding. This lecture challenges these interpretations by exploring textiles as human experience that is cultural and situational. In this way textiles are at once consistent and mutable. This sensory approach will be examined through archaeological and experimental approach to textiles and clothing in European prehistory.
