Intangible Heritage of Zoroastrian Silk Weaving
Closing presentation on the MSC-project DocZow by Azadeh Pashootanizadeh, postdoc at Center for Textile Research.
The Silk Road transformed Zoroastrian society during the Sasanian period. Raw silk from Tabaristan was crafted into luxurious textiles in Ray and traded through Khorasan. Archaeological finds, including fabrics from the 7th–14th century tomb of Bibi Shahr-Banu, highlight this rich silk heritage. After the Arab conquest, Zoroastrians preserved silk-making knowledge and terminology through literature and oral traditions, passing it across generations in Iran and the diaspora.
