Step into the Landscapes of Textile Production

By Kayleigh Saunderson and Karina Grömer

A Unique Fashion Show

Today, there is a clear focus on the sustainability of textiles and textile production, as well as the resources consumed in the process. For instance, the amount of water required to cultivate cotton is calculated and the harmful environmental impact of fast fashion is increasingly recognised.

But how much do we know about the use of resources and materials in the ancient past? How much can we calculate from the evidence available to us? How can this knowledge be used in an interpretation of past societies?

As a part of the Ancient Landscapes of Textile Production conference, we invite you to a unique fashion show featuring reconstructed costumes from Bronze Age Egypt and Sudan, Hallstatt, Austria and prehistoric Denmark, including the Viking Age. The garments have been recreated by textile archaeologists and skilled textile craftspeople. We will not only showcase the design of these costumes but also share insights into the time and material consumption, resources and tools required, and the skills and expertise needed to produce them.

This part of the conference is free of charge, but registration is required.

Following the fashion show, various textile techniques used to produce the costumes will be demonstrated and all participants are invited to practise. (17.00-18:30 at CTR)
